Livin' the Dream

I’m going to go ahead and admit straight out that I am neither a hippie (not really) nor a housewife. I’m not even a wife. But I am also not a dirty liar. This blog is about intention and creation. My ambition in life is to be a hippie housewife. I know, it sounds kind of awful and like I’m setting my sights too low; but I’ve thought about this a lot, and I think this is something that I could really be happy doing.

I’m well on my way…I’m getting married in October, so that’s part one down…being a wife. And I definitely have strong granola tendencies. I’m not sure what the exact criteria are to be considered a full-on hippie but I think I must be somewhere on the hippie spectrum. I mean, I do shave my legs and wear deodorant…but it’s Tom’s of Maine all natural deodorant, that shouldn’t hurt my hippie cred too badly. So, I really just need 2 things: lots of mad hippie skills and to quit my job. As for quitting my job, that is not going to happen in the foreseeable future. But instead of moping (any longer) while I wait to win the lottery, I’m going to focus on building up my hippie skills. Blogging isn’t really a hippie skill, but I think it will help me to focus my intention and bring my dream into today instead of leaving it out there in the big, bad someday. I’m getting too lonely here without it.

What does it mean to me to be a hippie housewife? Well, it almost goes without saying that the 3 R's will be in full effect, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Also minimal consumption, resourcefulness, self sufficiency (though not in a survivalist sort of way) and creativity are all paramount. For example, "I need a book shelf. I know, I'll salvage some boards, build it myself and then use my bad ass creativity to decorate it and make it all beautiful." Growing a lot of our own food and cooking from scratch are also important to me and I hope in the future to add chickens to the vegetable garden we already have. I think that pretty much sums up what I have in mind, though I'm sure things will evolve and expand as I move forward.

We have a smallish house with a nice, big yard. We already ripped out the front lawn and put in a vegetable garden 3 years ago and I am SLOWLY learning how to farm our little plot of land. Right now we are at the end of the sugar snap peas and blueberries are in full swing. I love being able to go out and forage a snack from the yard. I get to feel like a bear rummaging through the berry bushes. We've also harvested the first of our potatoes. This has been our first year trying them and we planted a variety that has pink skin and pink flesh. The first few were bitter tasting and disappointing but the rest have been delish! Matt made a lovely and tasty potato salad with them. Below is a pic of our most recent harvest and a shot of the garden in general.

Well, I think I will end this post with a hippie goal for the week....hmmm. I'm going to go with making nutricious, from scratch dinners all week. Wish me luck!
